The Mustangs had another productive and fun team camp in ‘08. The team left from Parker on July 5th on the Macedog express, beginning a 16 hour drive to Madison, Wisconsin. UW is my alma-mater, and they have become very competitive in the Big Ten, a powerhouse conference in Wrestling.

The drive out to Madtown was smooth, and we arrived around 11 a.m. We checked in and walked to the wrestling complex to participate in an Iron-Man competition. The events in the Iron-man included a giant tire lift, a weighted 40 yard dash, a backwards monkey-crawl, and a run where the wrestler had to hold 45 lbs plates in each hand. The guys did well and it was a fun way to start out the camp.

The next two days consisted of dual matches. Fortunately, we did not travel 1,000 miles to dominate everyone. There were 21 teams total, traveling from Michigan, Iowa, Colorado, and Wisconsin. The dual scoring was a little different, as all exhibition matches counted in the dual score. On the first day we went 5-0 in duals and were not really pushed. The next morning we came out flat and lost to the eventual team champion by 3 points. It was a good lesson for the younger guys to learn that in the morning of tournaments you have to get a great warm-up in. One of the best parts of the duals was we were given Donny Pritzlaff as our team “Councelor”. He had an amazing wrestling career, winning two D1 national titles and a world bronze medal. After most matches he would talk to the team about things that we could improve upon.
After the team camp was over, we traveled to practice with a club team. The name of the club is “Advance” School of wrestling run by Troy Steiner and Brad Owens. The practice was phenomenal, as we wrestled many of the Wisconsin kids traveling to Fargo nationals. Brad also showed us some creative drills and technique.
The last two days of the trip we went to Wisconsin Dells and had a great time. The only bad part of the trip was traveling home. About 4.5 hours away from Denver the Macedog broke down in “beautiful” Gothenburg Nebraska, population 140.

This breakdown could have been much worse, but fortunately we have the most supportive parents around to come to the rescue. Three Dad’s (Lewis, Douglass, and Davis) drove the 9 hour roundtrip to get the boys home.
Thanks to all for a great camp and don’t forget to improve yourself over the next few months!
